The chairshot that never should have happened - and that's it

Last Saturday at AEW's Fyter Fest the promotion went for a rather uncomfortable stunt to gather attention.
This article is here to explain while sometimes not all controversy is good controversy.

Directly after one of the company's Executive Vice Presidents Cody Rhodes, finished his match with newcomer Darby Allin, he was brutally attacked with a chairshot to the head by Shawn Spears.

The company states that the chair was gimmicked and it was an accident that it cut off the back of Cody's head.
All I can say is: I am disappointed by this action, even if the chair was gimmicked. There are several ways to do a shock debut/attack, but not by risking the performers health so insanely much.

Chairshots to the head are causing concussion much like other head-based moves like stiff headbutts, flying headbutts (its invention is now regraded by the creator Harley Race) and unsave variations of the Piledriver.
All major american wrestling promotions have banned chairshots to the head and some also varios piledriver variations for a reason. In the past not much was known about concussions, so chairshot the head happened on a daily basis. But then in 2007 - the darkest hour of pro wrestling happened. Chris Benoit's several concussions catched up to his sanity, resulting in him killing his wife, son and then himself.

AEW wants to take a new spin on wrestling, wants to be the future. But spots like these, that is a thing of the past. A lot of wrestlers suffer from the chairshots until this day, a lot of them already died, others are struggeling with their memory and/or also effecting the people around them, unfortunatley.

And: Unfortunatley there is more to it. Wrestlers, especially from large companies like All Elite Wrestling, are a role model to fans AND young wrestlers alike. And those are, despite being asked not to, repeating the moves of their heros. Chairshots to the head are just not smart.

So the big climax of this article is: Just do not do it. Ever again. Please.
